Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between NATO and ICAO?▾
They're the same alphabet — adopted by NATO in 1956 and standardised by the ICAO for aviation. The 26 codewords (Alpha, Bravo…) are identical.
Why is 'Juliett' spelled with two t's?▾
ICAO standardises 'Juliett' to make the final 't' clearly audible to non-English speakers, especially over weak radio signals.
Are the digits part of NATO phonetic?▾
Yes — 0–9 use 'Zero, One, Two, Tree, Fower, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Niner' in strict aviation usage. We use the simpler English forms for clarity.
