Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between NATO and ICAO?
They're the same alphabet — adopted by NATO in 1956 and standardised by the ICAO for aviation. The 26 codewords (Alpha, Bravo…) are identical.
Why is 'Juliett' spelled with two t's?
ICAO standardises 'Juliett' to make the final 't' clearly audible to non-English speakers, especially over weak radio signals.
Are the digits part of NATO phonetic?
Yes — 0–9 use 'Zero, One, Two, Tree, Fower, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Niner' in strict aviation usage. We use the simpler English forms for clarity.
