Frequently asked questions
What's the leap year rule?▾
A Gregorian year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4, except years divisible by 100 unless they're also divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not.
Why does the rule have the 100/400 exception?▾
The plain "every 4 years" rule slightly overcompensates the calendar year. Skipping centurial years (except every 400th) brings the average year length closer to the true tropical year.
How many leap years are there in 400 years?▾
Exactly 97 leap years per 400 years under the Gregorian rules.
